The
Rogers County Spirit is alive and well but in some places it can be
felt a little stronger and heard a little louder, especially when
there's kids and sports involved.
The upcoming baseball season is
one example of the high spirits and the pulling together of
community. Scott Walton was glad to be invited to take part
first-hand.
The Claremore High School
Baseball team is offering a lot of excitement this year with a team
roster packed with the names of talented players led by a new head
coach, Brent Payne. Payne is formerly of Oologah.
The baseball fundraising dinner
brought out eager parents, grandparents and baseball lovers for a
night of community and good times. Among the attendees was Don
Hill, a grandfather of one of the players who invited Walton along.
Walton, aside from being
Sheriff, is a baseball lover that followed his own son Joe around
the diamonds of Green Country in his High School days. Joe now
plays college ball while pursuing his degree.
Walton
was also thrilled when he was asked to attend and speak at the
Westside Winter Fest at the Westside elementary school.
Lou Robertson, Westside's
principal, asked the sheriff and former Westside student to speak at
the event.
Walton was in attendance as
Robertson received numerous awards for her accomplishments.
"She's a great principal and really loves her kids," Walton said.
Walton also said that he is
impressed with Robertson's "Tomorrow's Leader's" program which
brings in speakers from the Rogers County area to speak to the
students and encourage them to be leaders. Speakers include
civic and business leaders and the program has been cited as a
success by Superintendent McCLaren.
